Medicine Picking - Sweetgrass
Time & Location
About the event
On Wednesday, Sept 9th at 5pm, OCN Elder Alvin Merasty will be taking us out to collect Sweetgrass, also known as Holy Grass, which is one of the four sacred plants, (including cedar, sage and tobacco) and is used as a tool for prayer and purification. Here we will learn the teachings behind how the sweetgrass braids are believed to be the hair of Mother Earth and a gift from the Creator.
Aboriginal people have been using medicinal plants from the Boreal forest traditionally for thousands of years. We would like to honour these teachings of the medicines Mother Earth provides.
Using the medicines that YOU have collected is a beautiful way to connect and honour Mother Earth!
Bring a friend! Suitable for all levels. Kids too!
Dress for cool, wet weather with your trowel, snippers or knife, twine, collecting bag and rubber boots. You might want to wear or bring your traditional ribbon skirt/shirt when touching the medicines (if you have one). We will travel in our own vehicles.Cost: $15
